Castle Clinton, Battery Park Castle
Clinton was originally built to defend New York Harbor in 1812. Although it actually never saw military action, the fort was home to an entertainment palace in 1824 and then converted into an opera house shortly after. In 1854 Castle Clinton became an immigration center processing more than 8 million new arrivals to America, before it transformed yet again to New York City Aquarium. Today, Castle Clinton serves as the gateway and ticketing office for ferries sailing to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
